New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions

It is that time of year where people begin to form a list of promises they want to make to themselves. New Year’s Resolutions are positive and uplifting to some, while they are a joke to others. According Nielsen.com, Newswire, the top ten New Year’s Resolutions are:

• Stay fit and healthy
• Lose weight
• Enjoy life
• Save more money
• Spend more time with friends and family
• Get organized
• Learn something new
• Travel more

The pros to having resolutions are that they provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your life. In order to form a list, you have to first look back and evaluate your life. Another positive thing about resolutions is that they give you a goal and help you plan the next year.

The cons to a list of resolutions is it enables procrastination. For example, if you failed to lose weight this last year, no worries, you can procrastinate again this year. Also, there’s a lot of pressure to actually do your resolutions, especially if you share your list with friends on Facebook. Ultimately it is a personal choice whether to have a list or not.

Getting in Trouble for a DUI

Getting in Trouble for a DUI

Now you have to drive everyone home after a few drinks. Against your better judgement, you say you feel fine and decide to drive everyone home. After all, you’re the only one that can walk in a semi straight line.

While driving back to your house you get sleepy, and your driving skills are really slipping up. A cop notices you swerving and pulls you over. Whether or not your intentions were good, and you didn’t hurt anyone, you were still driving while intoxicated. The officer arrests you for DUI. Now what?

Don’t Forget Your Pets

Don’t Forget Your Pets

Don’t Forget Your Pets

It’s that time of year where traveling, shopping, and stressing over family gatherings are a typical thing. With this being a stressful time, folks often forget about their furry companions.

For starters, Christmas trees and pets can be a dangerous combination. Cats have a tendency to chew, and play with the ornaments and tree. If a tree isn’t anchored properly, it can fall over and do some serious damage.

Tinsel can also be a hazard for pets as well. With tinsel being shiny, pets may be tempted to try to eat it. Cats and dogs are thrilled to chew bits and pieces of the glittering decoration. The same applies to having holly or mistletoe in the house as well. Both holly and mistletoe are poisonous to your pets, so you may want to opt for the fake kind.

Try to avoid over feeding pets this holiday season. Sure it’s fun to sneak them the occasional leftover piece of meat. However, what may be okay for humans to eat, may not be okay for a pet. Also don’t spoil your pet with treats. Treats may be safe for your pet in moderation, but should not be given in substitution for a meal.

If you ever doubt what is safe for your pet this holiday season, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends getting in contact with a veterinarian.

Getting Arrested in a Foreign Country

Getting Arrested in a Foreign Country

Getting Arrested in a Foreign Country

No one ever wants to get arrested. Doing so means being placed into a small concrete cell with iron bars, possibly with other inmates. A person loses their freedom when arrested, and it is not fun at all. However, something most people do not consider, is what happens if they are arrested outside of the United States.

Here in the US, the Constitution grants all US citizens certain rights. These rights may not be granted in other countries. Some of these rights include:

• Innocent until proven guilty
• Having a speedy trial
• Having a trial with a jury of your peers
• Safety from cruel and unusual punishment

Here in the US, we are very lucky to have these rights. Not every country offers these rights to its citizens, let alone visitors from other countries.

When a US citizen is arrested while abroad, they are subject to that country’s laws. They will face whatever kind of trial that country offers. They will need to serve their sentence in one of that country’s jails as well. A US citizen abroad cannot rely on the US Constitution to protect them.

A US citizen who has been arrested abroad does have the right to request that the local US embassy or consulate be notified of their arrest. A consular officer will be sent to visit with the arrested person and provide them with some assistance. This right is thanks to the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

This is why it is extremely important for a person to familiarize themselves with the laws of the country they are visiting. Things that may be legal here in the US, may be illegal in some foreign countries. No one wants to get arrested, especially when they are outside the US.

California’s Gun Laws FAQ’s

California’s Gun Laws FAQ’s

There are very strict rules when it comes to California’s gun laws. These rules outline who is allowed to purchase a gun, when they can purchase, how many and how often they can purchase, how the gun must be stored at home, who may use the gun, when the gun may be used, and more. The gun laws for California are some of the strictest in the United States. Here are some frequently asked questions, and the answers to them.

Can I lend my gun to a family member?
A firearm can be given to a person’s adult child or adult grandchild as long as it is a legal firearm. A firearm can also be given to a person’s spouse. However, a person cannot lend or give the gun to any other relative, such as siblings, aunts and uncles, and cousins. If the firearm they receive is a handgun, they must first get a Handgun Safety Certificate, and fill out paperwork for the Department of Justice.

Can I sell my gun to a family member, or anyone else?
If a person wishes to sell their gun to another individual, they must do so through a licensed California firearms dealer. The recipient must also pass the background check.

How many handguns can a person own?
Californians are limited to one handgun purchase per 30 day period, but there is no limit on how many they can own total.

What are the proper ways to store my guns at home?
Guns must be kept out of reach of children. If a child manages to get a hold of the gun, the owner can face felony charges. Guns should be kept in locked containers or drawers. It is recommended that guns be locked away unloaded.

Who is and is not allowed to purchase and own a firearm?
Anyone who wishes to make a firearm purchase must first pass a background check. People who have been convicted for certain misdemeanors or any felony are not allowed to purchase or own a firearm in California. In addition, there are restrictions based on drug abuse, being held involuntarily because they were deemed a threat to themselves or others, driving records, mental conditions, domestic abuse, restraining orders, and more. Of-age individuals who pass the background check and pass their test will be allowed to purchase and own a legal firearm.

If you are a gun owner or plan to own a gun in the future, your knowledge of the gun laws will extend much farther than these frequently asked questions. Guns must be handled safely and responsibly so they do not end up injuring or killing anybody. Consequences for misusing a gun are not forgiving, and no one wants to have to deal with that.
