Most people would agree that sleep is an amazing thing. It helps us separate one day from the next, as well as helps us recharge from a long day of working. Unfortunately, as much as we love sleep, there are many people out there that do not get enough of it each night.

These people think they are okay, but they do not realize that they are hurting themselves by not getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep each night can greatly reduce your effectiveness at work the next day. For example, not getting enough sleep can make a person moody and irritable.

The longer you go without sleep, the worse your symptoms will become. If the person continues to miss out on sleep, he or she can experience:

Apathy
Slowed speech
Impaired memory
An inability to multitask
Lapses in attention
Nodding off during activities
Hallucinations

If you wish to avoid these symptoms, and perform better at work, then you need to be sure to get a full eight hours of sleep each night. Doing this will ensure that you have the energy and mental capacity to tackle a new day.

If you struggle to get the proper amount of sleep each night, try using these techniques to help you get the rest you need.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and large meals before going to bed.
Exercise regularly.
Keep your bedroom quiet, dark, and at a comfortable temperature.
Set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it.
Try waking up without needing an alarm clock and definitely avoid using any snooze features.

By following these practices, you should be able to get the good night sleep that your body needs to function properly. You will be able to wake up and face whatever the new day has in store for you.
